Google AI Overview search: Google has previewed what it calls the future of Gmail, and it marks a major shift in how users interact with their inbox. With over 3 billion monthly active users, Gmail is now rolling out AI-powered features designed to reduce reading, searching, and manual sorting.

At the centre of this update are AI Overviews for Gmail search and a completely new experience called the “AI Inbox”. Together, they signal Google’s ambition to move Gmail away from traditional email browsing and toward instant answers and summaries.

AI Overviews Turn Gmail Search Into Q&A

Much like AI Overviews on google.com, Gmail search is now becoming conversational. Instead of typing keywords, users can ask questions naturally. The search bar prompts users with “Get answers from Gmail”, encouraging a shift from scanning threads to asking direct questions.

For example, you could ask, “Who was the plumber that gave me a quote for the bathroom renovation last year?” Gemini’s advanced reasoning scans your inbox, analyses past messages, and instantly surfaces a summarised answer with the exact details you need.

During this process, Gmail continues to load the traditional search experience while the AI reviews your request. Once ready, it delivers an overview that references past email threads and includes citations so you can verify the source messages if needed.

AI Overviews in Gmail search are rolling out to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Meanwhile, AI-generated summaries that appear when opening long email threads are now free for all Gmail users.

Proofreading Goes Beyond Basic Grammar Fixes

Apart from that, Google is also upgrading Gmail’s writing assistance which will now have a new Proofread feature. This tool performs deeper checks across grammar, tone, clarity, and structure. Instead of only catching typos, it evaluates how your message reads.

Issues are underlined with suggestions that may include improving word choice, simplifying long or run-on sentences, correcting spelling, or making drafts more concise. Proofread is launching on the web for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

AI Inbox Reimagines The Inbox Itself

Perhaps the most significant change is the introduction of the “AI Inbox”. This new view appears alongside your regular Inbox in Gmail’s web sidebar, marked with a sparkle icon above “Inbox”.

Rather than listing emails, AI Inbox provides a personalised snapshot of what matters right now. It starts with a greeting, shows how many items need attention, and displays the last refresh time.

The first section that you need to look out for is the, “Suggested to-dos”, which highlights actionable items such as bills, reminders, or tasks. Gmail clearly states what needs to be done, followed by supporting details and links to the original emails.

Another section to look out for is the “Topics to catch up on”, covers important but non-urgent conversations. These are summarised with bullet points that provide context without requiring you to open every thread.

Privacy and Availability

All new features announced are powered by Gemini 3. Google emphasises that personal Workspace content is not used to train its AI models. The company says it has built a new “engineered privacy” environment where data remains within a secure boundary.

Users can disable AI features at any time by turning off smart features in Gmail settings.

AI Inbox will launch first for Trusted Testers, with broader availability planned in the coming months.
