Search leader Google is introducing a significant redesign in Google Maps after testing it for a while this year. The company is slowly moving away from the full-screen interface in Maps and switching to sheet-based UI in most places. The changes have started rolling out widely for users. The interface emphasises the presence of the map in the background while adopting rounder corners for the information sheet on the front.
Spotted by 9To5Google, the new listing in the foreground can be closed via a cross icon at the top right or by swiping/pressing the back button. The information directory of a location in Maps now appears on an overlay sheet with the map in the background for more context rather than covering the full screen.
Among other notable changes include the place where users search for directions. The UI where users enter the location remains unchanged with a fullscreen mode. But after a user enters both the start and end locations, the controls to change transport modes and filters are now placed at the bottom compared to the top placement earlier.
The sheet-based UI and bottom placement can help enhance the accessibility of the feature with one-hand usage. The revamped design has started reaching stable build users and is expected to roll out more widely across smartphones in the coming days. The testing of the feature reportedly restarted in May after a rollback earlier.

The tweaks are rolling out in stable Google Maps build version 11.136.x on Android. These changes are not rolling out for iOS users. In future, the company may tweak the bottom bar to include three icons compared to the five. The company may remove the 'Go' and 'Updates' tab from the home screen of Maps. Only the 'Explore', 'You' and 'Contribute' options may appear in future versions to further simplify the UI.
