As AI continues to make a mark in the technological landscape, it is now set to collide with major elections in 2024. In view of this, the leading tech giants such as Amazon, Google, Meta, OpenAI and others have pledged to prevent the misuse of AI-generated content and limit them from interfering with election campaigns. For context, over four billion people spanning 40 countries will head out to vote this year, according to the AI Elections accord.
The 'Tech Accord to Combat Deceptive Use of AI in 2024 Elections' comprises a series of commitments to deploy measures to counter AI-generated content that may deceive voters. Signatories at the Munich Security Conference (MSC) also pledged to work in partnership for tools which can detect and curb such AI content, raise awareness, offer transparency, and more.
These principles also sport provisions to track the origin of such AI content. Audio, video, and images are among the parts of the digital content that can "deceptively fake or alter the appearance, voice, or actions of political candidates, election officials, and other key stakeholders in a democratic election, or that provide false information to voters about when, where, and how they can vote" are a part of the accord.

The signatories highlighted in the release note include Adobe, Amazon, Anthropic, Arm, ElevenLabs, Google, IBM, Inflection AI, LinkedIn, McAfee, Meta, Microsoft, Nota, OpenAI, Snap Inc, Stability AI, TikTok, Trend Micro, Truepic, and X (formerly Twitter). Among the commitments that they agreed on include developing and implementing technology (and open-source tools) to curb risks of deceptive AI election content and assessing AI models to lessen the risks.
Plus, the platforms agreed to detect and address such AI content that is distributed or detected. Offering transparency of the actions, cross-industry resilience, engaging with civil society, and other efforts for raising awareness are among other commitments highlighted in the Tech Accord.
