After looking at companies like DocuSign, Kayak, PayPal, Shopify, and Yahoo, which have already implemented the same services to avoid online attacks, the company has been thinking about implementing the same for a while now.
According to Google's Christiaan Brand, Group Product Manager, and Sriram Karra, Senior Product Manager, "Passwords will be around for a long time, but they are frequently difficult to remember and put you at risk if they fall into the wrong hands."
The business announced that customers of Google Accounts who want to explore a passwordless sign-in experience will have this option starting today.
“Passkeys enable users to log in to websites and apps using the same methods they use to unlock their own devices, such as a fingerprint, a facial scan, or a screen lock PIN. Furthermore, unlike passwords, passkeys are immune to phishing attacks, making them more secure than things like SMS one-time codes,” according to Google.
Admins of Google Workspace accounts will soon have the opportunity to give their end users passkeys to use when logging in. It will take some time to switch to passkeys. Passwords and 2SV will therefore continue to function for Google accounts, according to Google.
Meanwhile, CEOs of Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI are reportedly meeting Kamala Harris in order to discuss the risks of artificial intelligence.
