Google has begun rolling out Google Photos integration within its Gemini app on Android, allowing users to search and retrieve images using natural language prompts. This feature enables queries like "Show me my photos from last summer" or "Find my photos of landscapes," leveraging AI to locate relevant images based on descriptions, dates, or locations. Additionally, users can ask for specific details found in their photos, such as "What did we eat at the hotel in Stanly?" or "What’s my driver’s license number?" Currently, this integration is available to a select group of invited users in the U.S. To enable it, users can navigate to the Gemini app's profile menu, select 'Apps,' and activate Google Photos under the Media section.
Earlier this month, Google casually updated its support page, confirming that Google Photos is finally being integrated with Gemini and the rollout has officially begun.
There are reports that Google Photos integration with the Gemini app on Android is now available for users. The technology firm from Mountain View had earlier this month claimed that the integration was being released to the public. This allows users to now ask Gemini questions regarding their images, which are stored in Google Photos, and either retrieve those particular images or extract relevant details from them. These features were announced at Google I/O 2024 and were referred to as Ask Photos. Google has already implemented a version of the feature within the Photos app.
Gemini Answering Queries Related To Google Photos
As per a report by 9to5Google, the Gemini integration with Google Photos is being rolled out to Android users from now. The staff members of Gadgets 360 have not yet been able to spot it, presumably due to Google implementing features systematically. The rollout might take up to a couple of weeks to reach all devices that are eligible to receive the update. To access this feature, Android users need to go to the Gemini app and select the profile icon located in the upper right corner. From there, they can access the Menu called ‘Apps.’ It was previously labelled ‘Extensions,’ but now, it should display Google Photos as an option. Enabling the toggle switch beside the application will now link the AI chatbot with the application, thereby activating it.
Now, there are two primary ways of employing the feature. The first one Gemini users encounter is locating a specific image from their library. Users will have to type in natural language prompts depicting what the image is, for example, ‘Show my photos from last summer’ or ‘show me recent selfies’. After this request is made, the AI will sift through the app and surface relevant images.
Additionally, Gemini is capable of retrieving specific data contained within the images. Thus, users can request, ‘What was the theme of my birthday party in 2019?’ or ‘What was the colour of my t-shirt that I wore on Sunday?’. As stated by Google, Gemini is capable of analysing images through computer vision and querying for the user’s needs.
Users can click on an image or album in Gemini to open it in Google Photos, and they can also tap on Gemini's overlay to drag and drop photos into other applications. However, only one photo can be moved at a time.
Currently, Gemini does not support photo editing, collage creation, labelling, or album creation and editing.
