Later this year, Google is set to unveil its Pixel 10 series, and it looks like there will be some major hardware improvements. Some of the most exciting features include wireless charging capabilities and possibly magnetic accessories similar to Apple's MagSafe. This accessory system is said to be called “Pixelsnap” and is expected to launch at the same time as the Pixel 10 series. This will allow users to charge their devices with magnets and use accessories that will attach magnetically as well, providing increased ease and efficiency.

Qi 2 and Pixelsnap: Google's New Charging Ecosystem

Android Authority claims that the Pixel 10 series will support Qi 2 wireless charging. If true, this could enable:

  • Faster charging speeds (possibly up to 50W with Qi 2.2)
  • Magnetic alignment for secure accessory attachment
  • An ecosystem of proprietary magnetic accessories called Pixelsnap

This move mirrors Apple’s successful MagSafe implementation, introduced with the iPhone 12 series in 2020.

Pixelsnap Accessories: What's Coming?

Google seems to be following in Apple’s footsteps after their success with MagSafe, which was released with the iPhone 12 series in 2020.

Monitoring and maintaining Google-adjacent sites suggest that three accessories are in development for purchase alongside the new Pixelsnap:

Accessory Name

Description

Pixelsnap Charger

Standard magnetic wireless charger

Pixelsnap Charger with Stand

Allows charging in both upright and landscape orientations

Pixelsnap Ring Stand

Likely a magnetic ring with a kickstand feature

Accessories will be available together with the Pixel 10 and subsequent phones supporting Qi 2.

Wireless Charging at 50W with Qi 2.2

Among other things, the report mentions an accessory called STN4, a wireless charger, with its description found in a trade database. This charger is likely to support Qi 2.2 and will offer:

  • Charging speeds of up to 50W
  • Faster and more efficient power delivery than current standards

If confirmed, Google could become the first Android manufacturer to offer Qi 2.2 wireless charging, ahead of competitors like Samsung.

Will Google Introduce Standby Mode?

It remains unclear if the Pixelsnap Charger with Stand will include software features similar to Apple’s StandBy Mode, which displays:

  • Widgets
  • Live activities
  • Photos while charging in landscape mode

If Google introduces a similar mode, it could further enhance the Pixel 10’s utility as a bedside or desktop display.

Competing with Apple and Samsung

Both Apple and Samsung have adopted Qi 2. While only Apple provides built-in magnetic attachments for accessories, Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S25 series supports Qi 2 but lacks magnetic alignment. This places Google in a better position to enhance user experience with the Pixel 10 series.

It looks like Google is prepared to outdo itself and other Android manufacturers with the introduction of the Pixel 10 series. If the rumors are true, Apple may have a competitor not only in innovation but also in the integration of their ecosystem. The Pixel 10 series might not just be an upgrade but a tremendous leap for Android.
