Google launched the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro in October last year. The smartphone debuted with a range of AI features and hardware upgrades compared to the Pixel 7 series. For the upcoming series, the company is reportedly preparing an upgraded modem which may offer better connectivity, according to Android Authority. This could also mean that the upcoming devices may support satellite connectivity.

As per Kamila Wojciechowska, modems have been one of the points of concern ever since Google shifted to its in-house Tensor chips for its Pixel devices. Google uses Samsung's Exynos modems, unlike the Qualcomm counterparts in previous Pixels. The stability of the modem's software was reportedly poor.

While things have improved with the Pixel 8 series, problems continue to persist. However, this could change significantly with the upcoming Pixel 9 series. The models are expected to be powered by the Tensor G4 which could have Samsung Modem 5400. This modem may be faster and more power-efficient than its predecessors.

It may also gain performance upgrades via a new software stack. The modem could also bring 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN) connectivity support, which implies satellite communication. The newest modem could debut on the Pixel 9 series and the Pixel Fold's second generation model.

Android Authority added that the company is also considering a 5G tablet (codenamed 'clementine') which may have the stated modem. The release timeline remains an unaddressed question to date. With these speculations, the Pixel 9 series is expected to become the first devices to get Android satellite connectivity implementation natively.

Initially, the option may be provided by T-Mobile in partnership with SpaceX. The connectivity medium will possibly be allowed for texting. Plus, the 'Satellite Gateway' app may allow easy connectivity using the 'Emergency SOS' feature. The app may ask users to answer a few questions in the first stage. Then it may let a user send notifications to Emergency contacts and send messages for help to emergency services.
