Google is quietly experimenting with a significant shift to its iconic homepage. The familiar “I’m Feeling Lucky” button—around since the earliest days of the search engine—is being swapped out in some tests for a new feature: an “AI Mode” button.
As The Verge reports, users on platforms like X and Threads have started noticing the change. Instead of the classic “I’m Feeling Lucky” option sitting below the search bar, a new “AI Mode” button has taken its place.
Traditionally, the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button would bypass the standard search results and take users directly to the top website for their query—a quick way to skip browsing. But this new button seems to point toward Google’s increasing focus on AI-enhanced experiences.

In a statement to The Verge, Google spokesperson Ashley Thompson confirmed the test is limited to select users participating in Google Labs. “We often test different ways for people to access our helpful features. This is just one of many experiments,” a Google spokesperson said.
Some users say the new button comes with a visual flair. When hovered over, it displays a rainbow-coloured border, while others report that the border appears by default without needing to interact with it.
One user, Glenn Gabe, shared a screenshot on X showing the button and commented, “I see this… AI Mode button next to Google Search.”

The button’s placement also seems to vary. Some users are seeing it embedded directly within the search bar, near the “Search by image” icon. Google had previously mentioned that a select number of users in the U.S. would begin to see an “AI Mode” option in Search, though it wasn’t clear how or where it would show up.
For now, it’s uncertain whether this new feature will permanently replace “I’m Feeling Lucky” or if it’s simply being tested as a companion feature placed elsewhere on the page. Given that this is still just an experiment, there’s no guarantee it’ll make a broader rollout.
While the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button hasn’t been a primary feature for most users in years, the shift to “AI Mode” could reflect Google’s evolving strategy—nudging users toward AI-generated results rather than traditional web listings. It may be Google’s way of suggesting that “AI-powered search queries are way better than visiting a bunch of links or heading over to a random website.”
And in another subtle update, Google also refreshed its “G” logo earlier this week for the first time in a decade. The new design keeps the familiar shape but introduces a smoother gradient, blending the colours in a more fluid, modern style.
