Google India has just released its Year in Search 2025 report, and the results paint a clear picture of what captured the nation's curiosity this year. Cricket continued its unmatched grip on Indian audiences, but there was an unexpected contender that really shook up the rankings. Gemini, Google's own AI chatbot, emerged as the second most trending search of the year, signalling how fast AI adoption has grown across the country.

IPL Leads India's Search for Curiosity Once Again
Not surprisingly, the Indian Premier League was the most trending search for 2025. The fan following for that league is incomparable, and this year's spike with results around matches, changes in teams, and live updates once again pushed it ahead of everything else. Together with the IPL, three more cricket-related terms – Asia Cup, ICC Champions Trophy, and the Women's World Cup – made their places secure in the top 10 overall.
Other terms which appealed most to Indian users included Maha Kumbh Mela, Saiyaara, and Dharmendra – all reflecting a mix of cultural, entertainment, and regional interests.
Gemini Dominates AI Searches Across India
In the AI category, Gemini was India’s number one trending AI-related search. The growing interest indicates that Indian users are rapidly trying out generative AI tools and incorporating them into everyday life. In third position was Elon Musk’s Grok, while Deepseek and Perplexity followed in fourth and fifth places, respectively. Coming in at number seven was ChatGPT, with the highly viral ChatGPT Ghibli Art trend in eighth.

When narrowing down the searches to what was 'trending' on the platform, the charts were dominated by AI-related trends: the Gemini trend, the Ghibli trend, the 3D model Saiyaara, Kantara: A Legend Chapter-1, Coolie, War 2 and Sanam Teri Kasam. This list was preceded by Squid Game on the TV front, following which came Panchayat, Bigg Boss, The Bads of Bollywood and Paatal Lok.
Location-based searches denote real-world concerns
India's location-related queries highlighted what people were actively tracking around them. Earthquakes, AQI levels, pickleball and the Saiyaara movie emerged as the top location-based queries, hinting at a mix of safety checks, health concerns and trending public interests.
As AI reshapes search habits and entertainment keeps the lead on curiosity, the Year in Search 2025 indicates where India is going next, but what are the changes that will define the forthcoming year?
