DPDP Rules 2025: Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, stated on Tuesday that the government is working to enhance the Digital Private Data Protection (DPDP) rules to better safeguard children from the risks of the digital world while enabling them to benefit from technology.
Speaking to the media, Vaishnaw explained that the upcoming DPDP rules would be fine-tuned based on the insights gained during their implementation. "We will refine these (DPDP rules) so that we can bring the power of technology to children while protecting them from various harms," he added.

DPDP Rules 2025
On January 3, the government unveiled the draft of the DPDP Rules 2025, with the window for public comments open until February 18, 2024. According to the draft, digital platforms will be permitted to process a child's data only after obtaining explicit consent from a verified parent or guardian. This verification can be done through voluntarily provided identity and age details or via a virtual token issued by a government-recognized legal entity.
No Impact on Privacy
Vaishnaw highlighted that the virtual token system, already successful in verifying Aadhaar-based transactions, would also be used in this context. "The tokens issued for verification will be temporary and limited to one transaction only. After that, they will be automatically destroyed," he explained. The minister further noted that, when necessary, region-specific guidelines could be introduced after consulting with local experts and stakeholders. He reassured that the use of these virtual tokens would not jeopardize individual privacy. Vaishnaw also clarified that whistleblowers would remain protected under the DPDP Act, with no time limitations set for filing complaints under the law.
