OpenAI’s much-anticipated GPT-5 went live on Thursday, but it didn’t take long for Elon Musk to challenge the hype. The xAI CEO claimed his company’s flagship model, Grok 4 Heavy, still has the upper hand.
Musk, who rolled out the Grok series just last month, called Grok 4 Heavy the “most intelligent model in the world” and insisted it’s still ahead of OpenAI’s latest release.
“Bottom line though: Grok 4 Heavy was smarter 2 weeks ago than GPT-5 is now, and G4H is already a lot better,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
According to Musk, Grok 4 Thinking also continues to outperform GPT-5 High on the ARC-AGI 2 leaderboard, a benchmark used to test advanced reasoning and problem-solving skills in AI systems.
He further revealed that Grok’s next major update is coming later this year, alongside the public rollout of Grok Imagine—the platform’s video and image generation tool.
“Grok 5 will be out before the end of this year, and it will be crushingly good,” Musk added.
The billionaire even took a jab at Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, warning that OpenAI could “eat Microsoft alive.”
OpenAI’s GPT-5: Faster, Smarter, More Capable
During its livestream announcement, OpenAI highlighted significant improvements with GPT-5 over the previous ChatGPT model. The company said the new version excels in coding, maths, writing, health, and visual perception. It can also build apps, websites, and games from simple natural language prompts, cutting down the need for manual coding.

GPT-5 is the first OpenAI model that can decide on its own whether to prioritise deep reasoning or efficiency depending on a user’s request.
The AI is available to all users for free, but with a usage cap—once that’s hit, people will be switched to a smaller GPT-5 Mini. Plus subscribers get higher limits, while Pro users can access GPT-5 Pro, the model’s most powerful variant.
