Google Play Protect, the company's answer to harmful Android apps, has received a much-needed upgrade. According to Google's data, the mechanism scans over 125 billion apps on a daily basis on several metrics, including malware and unwanted threats. To further upscale its feature set, the company introduced code-level scanning in real-time of apps via Play Protect in a recent blog post.

According to Google, the feature will recommend users a real-time scan of the app before installing it on the device to avoid associated threats. During the scanning process, important signals of the .apk package will be sent to Play Protect's backend infrastructure for code assessment. Once the process is complete, the results will be returned to the users which could include a "safe to install" update or a "potentially harmful" alert.

The aim is to offer protection from "polymorphic apps" hidden in the storage library. In the screengrab shared in the blog, an example of a 'WiFi Booster' app has been highlighted. On the scan is complete, in the "Harmful app blocked," window, the text reads: "This app can allow unauthorised access to your data or device."

These may use advancement methods (like AI) to evade detection. This security apparatus will learn from the apps sent for review and compare the app behaviour. The system will continue to improve to deliver enhanced protection from evolving threats.

The new enhancement is now rolling out to Android users with updated Google Play services in countries including India. More regions will be added in the later months. For context, Play Protect scans applications installed from "ephemeral sources" such as links or downloads even when a user is offline.

Google also highlighted its multi-layered approach to keep users safe on Android. Besides Play Protect, the search giant also offers regular security updates, permission controls, spam protection, Safe Browsing options and more to ensure data safety.
