Apple will host its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 next month, where the company will likely introduce its next-gen software products. Among the top highlights could be AI features on iOS 18. In the latest series of rumours around the OS, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman claims the company could revamp its Siri voice assistant with advanced AI capabilities to let users control app functions using voice commands.
Citing sources, Gurman said this will allow Siri to take control of apps for the first time. For this purpose, the company may revamp the underlying structure of the technology using large language models. The generative AI LLM could be among the company's significant push to join the AI race. The upgrade will likely be among the highlights at next month's event.
Other tweaks may include memo transcriptions, AI summaries, notification recaps, message replies, AI tools for photo editing, and generative AI emojis. Some of these features may be processed on-device. The rest could depend on the cloud. To introduce chatbot capabilities, the company is discussing a deal with OpenAI. Apple is reportedly also in talks with Google to use Gemini for similar purposes.
As for Siri, the voice assistant may open documents, move notes, send/delete emails, summarise articles and more. The company could also bring the capability to let Siri handle multiple commands across apps. This will likely introduce revamped controls for Siri for individual apps. However, the planned release has been reportedly pegged for 2025. Gurman noted iOS 18 may be released in September when Apple notably launches its new iPhones.
The system may also plan whether the feature requires on-device processing or should depend on the cloud. If the data is sent to the cloud, Apple could offer protection via Secure Enclave on the Mac chipsets that may power the server and bring "intelligence reports" for users.
