Apple has not officially revealed the iPhone 17 yet, but anticipation is already running high. With September often reserved for iPhone launches, speculation suggests the new model could arrive in just a few weeks. That leaves many buyers torn between picking up the iPhone 16 now or holding out for the iPhone 17. Based on leaks and industry chatter, here’s how the upcoming model could differ.
Display upgrades
One of the most talked-about changes is the possible addition of a 120Hz refresh rate on the standard iPhone 17. Until now, Apple has kept this feature exclusive to Pro models, so introducing it across the lineup would mean smoother visuals and perhaps an always-on display. The Pro versions are also expected to feature a new anti-reflective, scratch-resistant coating, while the standard variant may stick to the durability level of the iPhone 16.

Camera changes
Rumours point to the front camera doubling in resolution, jumping from 12MP to 24MP. This improvement could particularly appeal to users who take a lot of selfies or rely on their iPhones for video calls and content creation. On the rear, however, Apple is unlikely to change much for the regular iPhone 17 — it’s expected to keep the dual-camera setup and vertical layout seen on the iPhone 16. Pro models will likely continue with the broader, horizontal visor-style arrangement.
Design and build
Design reports suggest that the iPhone 17 could move to an aluminium frame, with a lighter titanium option offered for a new “Air” edition. Another potential refinement involves the use of metalens technology, which could shrink Face ID hardware. That would allow Apple to make the Dynamic Island slightly smaller and free up more usable screen space compared with the iPhone 16.
Performance and features
Performance might not see dramatic shifts, as both iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 are expected to run on Apple’s A18 chip. However, RAM could set the models apart, with 8GB likely for the standard version and 12GB reserved for Pro and Air variants. Both should launch with iOS 26, which brings Apple Intelligence features such as Adaptive Power to stretch battery life.
Price expectations
The iPhone 16 launched in India at Rs. 79,900 for the base 128GB version. Early reports indicate that the iPhone 17 may debut at a similar price point. That means buyers waiting for the new model could access the latest updates without paying more, while those choosing the iPhone 16 now may benefit from discounts after the iPhone 17 is unveiled.

Looking ahead
Although the iPhone 17’s changes seem evolutionary rather than game-changing, the timing of its release is significant. Apple is approaching the iPhone’s 20th anniversary in 2026, which could mark a more radical redesign, and perhaps even the company’s first foldable iPhone.
