In a major boost to India’s electronics manufacturing sector, iPhone maker Foxconn has announced plans to set up a new production facility in Greater Noida. The upcoming plant is expected to generate a staggering 40,000 jobs, further strengthening India's position as a key hub in Apple’s global supply chain. This move is part of Foxconn’s broader expansion strategy in India, aimed at diversifying its manufacturing operations beyond China. The Greater Noida facility will likely focus on assembling iPhones and other Apple products, signalling increased local production for both domestic and global markets. With job creation and industrial growth at its core, the project is being seen as a win-win for both the Indian economy and the global tech giant.
Apple x Foxconn
Apple and Foxconn are business partners, having a longstanding collaboration since Foxconn is also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd, which is a Taiwanese MNC with Apple as one of its main partners.
Simply put, Apple’s partners depend on Foxconn assembling most of their products. The relationship is complicated, with a number of conflicts arising over the years, but both remain deeply connected in the global electronics supply chain.
300 Acre Land From Uttar Pradesh Government in Noida
According to sources, officials from Uttar Pradesh and reps from a Taiwanese company have already met up twice in Delhi and Lucknow to discuss a new project. It looks like the focus will be on making mobile phones.
165 Acres of Foxconn’s Land in India Planned for Apple and Foxconn’s Solo Project
Foxconn's facility would expand the infrastructure base in India, especially the Greater Noida facility would serve to enhance the factory that serves Foxconn which is the principal international contractor of Apple Inc.
It is expected that the facility would be constructed by 50HCL and Foxconn’s joint venture runs a 50 hectare site set aside for an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test facility. Sources say that the facility is supposed to be established on about 300 acres of land. Earlier this year, reports claimed that the HCL-Foxconn joint venture had opened tender discussions with integrated industry leaders CTCI from Taiwan and L&T for the semiconductor assembly and packaging OSAT facility. The joint venture is pending a cabinet decision. It is reported that Foxconn is investing 37.2 million dollars to acquire 40 percent equity of the venture.
The new Apple facility is being projected to provide employment opportunities for 40,000 individuals and will have enough housing for all workers within the complex.
It was further reported that the UP government was keen on this initiative since the Noida-Greater Noida belt is responsible for nearly half the mobile exports from India.
“UP will serve on the best possible hands for having a facility for Apple. Placing it at Noida will augment the ecosystem of the area,” the sources pointed out as well.
The first batch of iPhone 15’s were assembled at the Foxconn factory in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu in 2023. Foxconn's iPhone production shifted to the US after Apple made one of its boldest moves in 2018, when it transferred over 600 tons of iPhones, which funded 1.5 million, to the US as soon as Trump’s tariffs were announced. With this bold move, Apple supported the campaign trucking in Indian's with Apple lobbyist in US airport shuttle who fought the airport productive system surrounding the Chennai airport, telling officials there, "It only needs six hours for customs!"
