When it comes to flagship smartphones, the camera is often the biggest talking point, and it looks like Vivo is leaving no stone unturned with the rumoured X500 Ultra. A new leak suggests the company is still fine tuning its camera hardware and has not yet settled on the telephoto sensor that will power its next premium phone. That means the final camera setup could still change before the handset is officially unveiled.

Vivo Reportedly Testing Three Different 200MP Periscope Cameras
According to Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo, Vivo is currently testing three different 200 megapixel periscope telephoto sensors for the X500 Ultra. These sensors are said to feature 1/1.12 inch, 1/1.3 inch and 1/1.4 inch optical formats, with the company yet to make a final choice.
The leak claims the largest 1/1.12 inch sensor is currently the most advanced option under consideration. Bigger sensors usually capture more light, which can translate into sharper zoom shots and better low light performance. The downside is that they take up more space within the phone itself.
This might be the reason behind Vivo's interest in the small-sized 1/1.3 inch and 1/1.4 inch sensors. Although these sensors might not have the same photographic capabilities as the large-sized sensor, they will help keep the phone slim and prevent any bulky camera bump. At this stage, it seems Vivo is trying to find the sweet spot between camera performance and everyday usability.
Vivo May Have Changed Its Plans for Zoom Photography
Interestingly, this is not the first time the X500 Ultra's camera system has made headlines. An earlier leak from the same tipster suggested Vivo may have dropped the idea of using a dedicated 10x periscope telephoto camera altogether.
Instead, the company is reportedly working on a single 200 megapixel periscope sensor that relies on in sensor zoom technology. If that turns out to be true, Vivo could simplify the camera system while still aiming to deliver high quality long range zoom performance.

Since the X500 Ultra is still in the testing phase, nothing is set in stone just yet. The choice of many companies is usually not final until they try out many hardware solutions, hence they can make further adjustments in the selection process. According to past predictions, the Vivo X500 Ultra is predicted to hit the market in 2027 but not in the coming year.
