SMARTPHONE explosions frequently make headlines for causing injuries and even proving fatal for a user. In the latest case, an eight-year-old girl, identified as Adithya Sree, from Thrissur, Kerala, died after the smartphone on which she was reportedly watching a video exploded.

According to a report by news agency ANI, quoting the police, the smartphone which exploded was a three-year-old Redmi phone manufactured by Chinese Smartphone maker Xiaomi. The company has now also reacted to the incident and said that it will assist the authorities in every way possible.

"The incident happened Monday night around 10 PM near Thiruvilwamala in Thrissur district. It was a three-year-old Redmi phone which exploded killing the child. A forensic examination will also be conducted," ANI quoted Pazhayannur police as saying.

What Xiaomi said:

Reacting to the incident, Xiaomi India, in an official statement, said, "At Xiaomi India, customer safety is of utmost importance, and we take such matters extremely seriously. We stand with the family in this time of difficulty and hope to support them in any way possible. The matter is currently being investigated. We will work with the authorities to determine the actual cause of the incident and will support them in any required manner."

According to media reports, the girl and her grandmother were in the house when the fatal incident happened. The girl was reportedly using the handset under the blanket. A detailed forensic examination will follow to ascertain further details.
