Manus AI: Manus AI, a new artificial intelligence agent developed by Monica, has been making headlines since its launch last week. The China-based company The Butterfly Effect, which owns Monica, describes Manus as a general AI agent capable of handling a wide range of complex tasks. A demonstration video showcasing its capabilities quickly went viral, with many calling it “China’s second DeepSeek moment.” Unlike traditional AI models that rely on a single system, Manus operates using multiple large language models (LLMs).
What Sets Manus AI Apart?
Monica has launched a dedicated website for Manus, promoting it as an AI assistant designed to help with both professional and everyday tasks. While AI tools like OpenAI’s Operator, Google’s Gemini Deep Research, and Salesforce’s Agentforce focus on specific industries, Manus aims to be more flexible.
According to the company, it can plan trips, analyze stock portfolios, conduct research, and even make online purchases. It runs in a secure, cloud-based environment, allowing it to complete tasks independently. However, Monica has not disclosed details about the AI models behind Manus, leading to some skepticism.
Performance and Early Reactions
Monica claims that Manus outperforms OpenAI’s DeepResearch tool on the General AI Assistant (GAIA) benchmark. However, it is currently available only to a limited number of testers, and there is no timeline for a wider release.
The lack of transparency about the AI’s inner workings has raised some concerns. Monica’s research lead, Yichao “Peak” Ji, has promised to share more details soon, but for now, the company’s claims remain unverified.
Early testers have had mixed reactions. Victor Mustar, Head of Product at Hugging Face, praised Manus as “the most impressive AI tool I’ve ever tried.” Meanwhile, Alexander Doria, Co-Founder of AI startup Pleias, reported frequent errors while using it.
For now, the excitement around Manus AI is matched by curiosity and doubt. Whether it can truly deliver on its promises remains to be seen.
