Former Assassin’s Creed franchise head Marc-Alexis Coté has revealed that his departure from Ubisoft wasn’t voluntary. In a LinkedIn post, Coté clarified that he was asked to “step aside” by the company amid internal restructuring linked to the formation of Vantage Studios—a new Tencent-backed subsidiary overseeing Ubisoft’s biggest franchises, including Assassin’s Creed.
Coté, who had been vice president and executive producer for Assassin’s Creed since 2022, spent more than two decades at Ubisoft before his exit earlier this week.
Ubisoft’s Restructuring and Vantage Studios
Reports suggest Coté was offered a leadership position at Vantage Studios but turned it down. In his statement, he said Ubisoft “decided to transfer the leadership of the Assassin’s Creed franchise to someone closer to its new organisational structure.”

“A different position was mentioned, but it did not carry the same scope, mandate, or continuity with the work I had been entrusted with in recent years,” Coté explained, emphasising that the decision to leave was not his own.
Coté’s Clarification
“I did not walk away. I stayed at my post until Ubisoft asked me to step aside,” Coté wrote. He added that he held no resentment toward the company but felt compelled to set the record straight about the nature of his departure.
Coté hasn’t revealed what’s next for him, though he hinted at future plans, saying he’s “waiting bravely for [his] next five-year mission… to build strange new worlds.”
Ubisoft’s Response
Ubisoft confirmed Coté’s exit in a statement to IGN, acknowledging that his expectations for the Vantage Studios transition “did not align” with the company’s plans. Vantage Studios co-CEO Christophe Derennes reportedly expressed disappointment at Coté’s decision to move on.

“While we are saddened to see him go, we’re confident that our talented teams will carry forward the strong foundation he helped build,” a Ubisoft spokesperson said.
Conclusion
Coté’s departure marks a major shift in leadership for Assassin’s Creed — one of Ubisoft’s flagship franchises. With Vantage Studios now managing its future, the series is entering a new era under a different creative direction, while fans wait to see what Coté’s “next mission” might bring.
