Insomniac Games, the studio behind the acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise, is reportedly lining up a busy few years. According to a new report, the long-awaited Marvel’s Wolverine is targeting a 2026 release window, while the previously rumored Venom spin-off is still in active development.
Wolverine: A Darker, More Mature Take on Marvel Heroes
First revealed in 2021 with a cinematic teaser, Marvel’s Wolverine is in development exclusively for the PlayStation 5. Since then, news around the project has been scarce, with most updates coming from leaks following the 2023 ransomware attack on Insomniac.
The latest report suggests that development is going smoothly, and a new trailer is scheduled to be revealed this month, possibly at the State of Play event. If the 2026 release window is correct, Wolverine would be the next major title Insomniac is releasing for Marvel after Spider-Man 2.

The 2023 leaks mentioned something to do with the tone and how it would be darker, focusing on the more brutal nature of Wolverine, and the R-rated comic book inspirations. Fans expect a more mature and narrative-driven game with gritty action, far different from the light story Mendelsohn’s Spider-Man games are known for.
Venom Spin-off: Eddie Brock Takes Center Stage
Alongside Wolverine, the report claims Insomniac is also working on a Venom game, despite earlier speculation that it had been scrapped.
- Eddie Brock as Venom this time seems to be in tune with his character in the comics as opposed to the Hardy portrayal.
- Due to the lack of story DLC in Spider-Man 2, the game may showcase the character Carnage (Cletus Kasady) as a cut character.
- He may also have access to a monstrous Anti-Venom form, providing Brock with new abilities, further diversifying the gameplay.
In the available gameplay, Brock has access to new explosive abilities which aids in gameplay dynamism.
- While not verified, the new story elements align with the recent information about the tone becoming darker with a graphic approach to story telling in the Spider-Man universe which has been tied to other rumors.
- There is a tremendous desire to broaden the studio's multiverse narrative as reflected in the patch work story where Spider-Man 2099/Miguel O’Hara is expected to appear alongside the other future Marvel title Insomniac is working on.
- These story details remain unverified, but they align with leaks pointing toward a darker, horror-inspired spin-off set in the Spider-Man universe.
More Marvel Projects on the Horizon?
Insomniac has hinted in its report that Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099 might make an appearance in one of their future Marvel projects - whether this means the Venom spin-off or possibly Spider-Man 3 (it remains to be determined), however; but this shows its ambition for expanding multiverse storytelling.

Why This Matters
If accurate, Insomniac could be positioning itself as the centerpiece of Marvel’s gaming universe, mirroring what Marvel Studios achieved with film. With Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Venom all under development, PlayStation fans are looking at a stacked lineup of exclusives heading into the mid-2020s.
Given Insomniac’s proven track record with fast development cycles and polished superhero gameplay, Wolverine in 2026 feels plausible — but the focus on secrecy since the ransomware leaks suggests Sony wants to control the narrative carefully.
The Road Ahead
- Spider-Man 2 PC release earlier this year extended Insomniac’s reach.
- Wolverine (2026) is expected to bring a new tone and gameplay direction.
- Venom spin-off could flesh out the darker corners of the Spider-Verse.
- Spider-Man 2099 hints at long-term multiverse ambitions.
For now, fans are awaiting Sony’s next State of Play showcase, where Wolverine may finally break its long silence with new footage. If both Wolverine and Venom deliver on their promise, Insomniac could redefine Marvel gaming for the next decade.
