Meta is making adjustments to focus on supporting the original creators in response to uncontrolled plagiarism along with spam content flooding Facebook. To alleviate the rising concerns regarding reposts, low-effort posts, and inauthentic content, Meta is implementing policies centred on fostering real content and diminishing the reach of reposted content.
The aim is to protect time and effort put into crafting original content by prolific creators from being exploited and overshadowed by re-tweeters of viral content.
What counts as ‘Unoriginal Content’?
Meta defines unoriginal content as
- Posts, videos, or photos copied from other creators without credit or permission
- Content that's re-uploaded without meaningful edits or transformations
- Low-effort reposts aiming to gain followers or views without adding any new value
It’s worth mentioning Facebook is not banning resharing entirely. Reacting to videos and remixing them creatively while respecting copyright laws remains permitted.
Key Changes Meta Is Rolling Out
Meta aims to improve Facebook’s content ecosystem by taking the following steps:
- Repost demotion: Reposts will be displayed to a smaller audience which will amplify the visibility of original posts.
- Consequences for habitual offenders: Pages or profiles that overtly rehash content may be barred from accessing monetisation features.
- Attribution link integration: Facebook is testing features that may allow a visible link to the original creator when content is shared.
- Diminished visibility across the board: The circulation of low-quality duplicate videos will be severely restricted.
Tips to Keep Your Content Original and Visible
To remain in Meta’s good graces while expanding your audience, Meta suggests:
- Share your own recorded videos, designs, or written work.
- If you must use someone else’s work, transform it by adding context, narration, visual changes, or alterations.
- Avoid uploading short clips that do not impart entertaining or instructional value.

- Refrain from TikTok-style videos that feature watermarked audio and vocals or vice versa.
- Use precise captions and 3 to 5 relevant hashtags while avoiding excessive links, shouty text, and text in all caps.
When Will These Rules Take Effect?
Meta states that these enforcement measures will be implemented in cycles over the next few months. Creators will receive alerts when their content breaches policy boundaries, and enforcement frameworks will be established to monitor originality.
Facebook is prioritisisng those creators who offer unique and useful content on the platform. If you are simply replicating others’ work or riding on viral trends without any innovation, your reach and potential earnings will fall significantly.
