Meta Platforms, a major social network firm, revealed on Tuesday that, in response to a request from Brazil's data protection authority, it will inform citizens about how it intends to use their personal data to train generative artificial intelligence (AI).

Users of Meta in Brazil can opt out of the company using their data to train generative AI, the company said in a statement. Users in Brazil will start to receive the warnings on Tuesday via email and notifications on Facebook and Instagram.

Brazil's National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) reversed its July suspension of Meta's new privacy policy regarding the use of personal data for AI training, stating that Meta had consented to make the disclosures.

At the time, Meta stated that it had chosen to halt the tools while ANPD and itself engaged in discussions to allay the authority's concerns regarding its application of generative AI.

Meta just repeated that the suspension had been imposed while it was in negotiations with the ANPD when Reuters asked it on Tuesday if it would resume using the tools once the ANPD lifted it.
