With the new Copilot Mode, Microsoft is enhancing its Edge browser by integrating AI technology that can assist users in their browsing tasks. Like virtual assistants, AI can help perform actions through smart assistance technologies, aid in backend activities, research, offer comparisons, summarise information, and even perform tasks on behalf of the user.

Once activated, Copilot Mode is experimental and currently free for all Edge users on Windows and Mac with access to Microsoft Copilot. 

What Can Copilot Mode Do?

With Copilot Mode, a new chat-based tab is added, which allows users to communicate with AI during browsing sessions. Some of its capabilities include the following:

Smart Recipe Help: Ask Copilot for substitution suggestions or to make a recipe vegan.

Quick Summaries: Save time with summarised versions of long blog posts or web content.

Tab Awareness: With user permissions, Copilot can “see” all the open tabs, assisting users to price compare, research, and organise information.

Voice Commands: User interaction with Copilot is possible through voice input.

Advanced Features Coming Soon

Microsoft has confirmed future updates will allow Copilot to access browser history and saved credentials to perform functions like:

  • Making restaurant reservations.
  • Completing online errands or tasks.
  • Making tailored suggestions based on prior browsing.

Users will have complete oversight of what Copilot can access and will have clear indications of when Copilot is active and operational.

Privacy and Control

The AI’s capability to view tabs and other personal information might be troubling from a privacy standpoint. But, Microsoft stresses that Copilot Mode is entirely opt-in and will only function with explicit user consent.

Final Thoughts

Once again, Microsoft is seeking to integrate AI technology into commonplace web activities with the introduction of Copilot Mode. It includes an assortment of web interaction features, such as summarising, voice input, and tab comparison.
