X (previously known as Twitter) deleted a large chunk of the images and related content that were published on its platform before December 2014, leaving users confused. While it's unclear whether this is a planned cost-cutting effort planned by owner Elon Musk or an unintended technical fault, the missing content has prompted outrage among the platform's global user base.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, sparked a flurry of reactions from users who discovered their previous tweets were suddenly missing from visual media. According to reports, while the media items appear to have vanished, the underlying language of the tweets remains intact, meaning that the content was not permanently destroyed but rather hidden or inaccessible.

Tom Coates, a well-known tech commentator said, "Twitter has now removed all media posted before 2014. That's nearly a decade of images and videos from the early 2000s removed from the service," he said on his X.com profile.

The time of the event matches Twitter's 2016 enhancements, which included "enhanced URL enrichment." Within the Tweet payload, this feature attempted to provide users with the HTML title and description of a website, complete with matching operators. This enhancement could be attributed to the rapid elimination of outdated data.

Elon Musk and X have not made any official statement regarding the issue at the time of writing the article. However, Elon Musk is known for making statements about any issue on the platform soon after he gets noticed.
