ChatGPT rolled out custom instructions for Plus users on July 20. This allowed users to add a custom input that will be followed in every subsequent response by the AI model. While it was initially available to Plus subscribers, the feature is expanding to free users. Earlier, the functionality was undergoing testing during the beta launch in the premium tier.

This option allows users to enter "preferences or requirements" that they want the model to consider while generating output. Announcing the update, OpenAI said: "Custom instructions are now available to ChatGPT users on the free plan, except for in the EU & UK where we will be rolling it out soon!"

According to the AI research company, custom instructions is a product of feedback from users across 22 countries. Plus subscribers can head to 'Settings', then look for 'Beta features/New Features' and turn on 'Custom instructions'. After completing the process, the feature will appear in the settings on the iOS app and in the menu on the web app.

For quick context, ChatGPT is among the widely used chatbots across the world. Other models that compete with OpenAI's language model are Bard from Google and Microsoft's AI-powered Bing.
