Samsung has stepped into the world of extended reality (XR) with the announcement of a new headset, developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. At a price of $1,799, it is intended to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro and provide a premium, yet somewhat more affordable, entry into the world of immersive computing.

Key Features of Samsung Galaxy XR

Display: Galaxy XR features a 4K micro-OLED display with a 90 Hz refresh rate for crystal-clear details and high contrast, ideal for immersive virtual reality and augmented reality experiences.

Processor: Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 system-on-a-chip was specifically created to meet the rigorous XR use cases with ultra-low latency rendering and efficient computing performance.

AI Integration: Samsung and Google have collaborated to integrate Gemini, an AI system which enables users to use voice control, vision tracking and gestures for a more natural multitasking experience.

Design: At 545g, the headset comes with a removable battery pack to help avoid desk clutter but have that to keep your balance on long sessions.

Android XR — The New Frontier for Immersive Computing

The Galaxy XR is powered by Android XR, a new operating system developed jointly by Google and Samsung with support for XR devices. It is equipped with a variety of apps including Google Maps, YouTube and Google Meet designed for the 3D space experience. Android XR also provides the groundwork for an expanded ecosystem of spatial computing apps, essentially creating an Android counterpart to Apple’s visionOS.

A Strategic Challenge to Apple’s Vision Pro

Samsung’s foray into XR, supported by heavyweights Google and Qualcomm, represents a significant strategic effort to establish an open competitive offering to Apple’s closed Vision Pro world. Married to Samsung’s hardware prowess and Google’s AI and software ecosystem, Qualcomm’s XR chip innovation in the new Galaxy XR marks the single most powerful neophyte of Apple's stranglehold on mixed reality.

With its attractive pricing, AI-based experience and the new Android XR platform, the Galaxy XR may really redefine what we think when speaking of immersive computing — and finally bring some real competition to Apple’s Vision Pro.
