Get ready for more foldables from Samsung. AFTER distracting everyone with the Galaxy Z Fold 7, the company has another foldable phone up its sleeve that could challenge Apple’s much-rumoured iPhone Fold all over again. This new device may now be called the Samsung Wide Fold if recent reports are to be believed, and it could pave a way forward for Samsung’s range of foldable devices.

The reason this is interesting is that the Wide Fold supposedly bears a close resemblance to Apple’s plans for a foldable. Both companies seem to be homing in on the same design choices, particularly where screen size and aspect ratio are concerned, so we might well have a headline-making rivalry on our hands in the foldable phone market.

A wider foldable with a tablet-like feel

Rumours indicate the Samsung Wide Fold may come with a huge internal OLED display that measures about 7.6 inches. That brings us nearly neck and neck with the rumoured 7.58-inch foldable iPhone screen from Apple. Miraculously, both of those devices are rumoured to feature a 4:3 aspect ratio when they open up.

This is a departure from the tall, skinny screens that have been standard fare for foldable phones. With a 4:3 application, it's more book-like and quite close to the feeling of a small tablet. Day-to-day, that could manifest as easier-to-read text, a more comfortable view by the networking apps or better multitasking with content side-by-side.

Photos, documents and web pages can also appear more natural on a wider display, with fewer odd cropping cuts. That being said, if you mostly watch widescreen videos, the effect may be less pronounced — most streaming content is organised in other wider cinematic ratios.

Not a replacement, but an expansion

Samsung does not intend to discontinue its current Fold range in favour of the Wide Fold models, it is said. Rather, the company appears to be growing its portfolio. Two Fold models and one new Flip model are said to be in the 2021 foldable lineup.

In this configuration, the regular Galaxy Z Fold 8 would keep a form factor not too different from the current Fold 7, while there’d be a Wide Fold for people who like to spread their screen out as far as possible. Samsung’s size allows it to go after both preferences without pushing everyone into one form factor.

Apple’s foldable ambitions loom large

Apple, for its part, is rumoured to reveal its own foldable iPhone at its usual fall launch event. If it does, it’s almost perfectly timed with Samsung’s new foldable push and will position the Wide Fold as an outright counter to Apple’s first foldable.

There are also murmurs that Wide Fold could house better 25W wireless charging, which would be a nice bump and just another differential in this new category.

None of this is official yet, but the size and aspect ratio similarities point to Samsung and Apple targeting the same sweet spot: a foldable that feels less like an experimental phone and more like a practical everyday tablet you can tuck in your pocket. If these rumours are true though, the next chapter of the foldable wars could be Samsung versus Apple, face-to-face.
