OpenAI is now allowing users to have more control over the way ChatGPT speaks. Following a fresh overhaul to ChatGPT’s Personalisation settings, users are now able to more finely adjust chatbot personality and conversational style as opposed to trying to make do with an off-the-peg persona.

Among the 10 new adjustable controls, there are now four that come with the update, including Warm, Enthusiasm, Header & Lists and Emoji. For each option, people can indicate if they want more, fewer or the same amount. Logically, you can pick if ChatGPT should sound friendly, more energetic or careful and thoughtful or warmer and playful with emojis — or tone all that down for less colourful, removed responses instead.

This update is an expansion of a previous update OpenAI launched about a month ago which brought Professional, Candid and Quirky options under the umbrella of “Base style and tone”. And also, these tools give users much more control over how the responses feel, not just what they are.

The timing isn’t accidental. Engadget reported that OpenAI came up against considerable resistance earlier this year when GPT-5 replaced GPT-4o. A number of users reported that ChatGPT suddenly seemed colder and more robotic, less conversational. They saw the personality change as a turn-off that made interactions less fun even if, technically speaking, the answers were right.

OpenAI is clearly responding to that feedback by letting people adjust warmth, enthusiasm, formatting style and emoji use. The concept is simple: different users want different vibes. Some will prefer brief, professional answers; others may want responses that are more like a friendly chat. Now, there is no need to choose.

In addition to these tone dials, OpenAI has also been adding new creative tools to ChatGPT. The company recently replaced ChatGPT Images with a new model, GPT Image 1.5 that promises faster image generation, better quality edits and enhanced visual consistency. OpenAI also included a new Images section in ChatGPT with predefined styles, filters and prompts to help get users started off on the right foot.

All together, these updates are pointing to a pretty clear direction. OpenAI isn’t just interested in making ChatGPT smarter—it’s planning to make sure it’s a perfect fit for the person using it.
