WhatsApp, a Meta-owned messaging application, tests new features and enhancements on its platforms at regular intervals. In the latest move to improve the user experience on Android, the platform is now developing an option to double-tap to share reactions to messages, according to WABetaInfo. The feature was spotted in the Android beta "2.24.16.7" version.
As per the report, the "under development" double-tap reaction feature is not rolling out for beta testers. However, testing build users must keep their app updated from the Google Play Store to ensure the functionality is available at the earliest once it starts rolling out. The development of an updated option to react to messages comes after the recent works on a reaction shortcut within the media viewer screen.
According to the video clip shared in the report, WhatsApp may let users react to a message with a double-tap on it. It is expected to decrease the reaction times in a message. By default, a double tap will return a heart emoji. It is unclear whether WhatsApp will allow users to change the default emoji choice.

WhatsApp is now developing a new feature to allow users to quickly react to messages with a double-tap, and it will be available in a future update!https://t.co/HNLgBlQy48 pic.twitter.com/NZq74BdcNC
In the present state, users need to choose an emoji from the reaction tray before sending a reaction to a message via a long press. But with double-tap, users may only have to open the tray if they wish to share a different emoji than the default red heart, WABetaInfo noted. The report added the option to disable the feature is not currently planned, which may trouble some users.
Users may end up reacting to older messages when scrolling through the chats. A toggle to switch off the function could help curb such accidental instances. Meanwhile, WhatsApp is also testing AR call effects and filters in the Android version of the app. It will let users improve their video-calling experience with features such as face touch-up, skin smoothing and low-light mode.
