WhatsApp Nearby Share: Meta-owned messaging application WhatsApp regularly tests and introduces new features for users on the app. In the latest move to improve the user experience, the company is developing a file-sharing feature to allow Android users to share media with nearby people. It will be available in an upcoming version of the app, WABetaInfo noted.
According to the report, the feature is "under development" and not rolling out for users. The functionality was spotted in the works in the Android "2.24.2.20" beta version available on the Google Play Store. To send and receive files, both the involved devices "must have People nearby open". It will enable sharing of files only to the intended user and ensure secure file transfer with people in close proximity.
To view the transfer request, users may have to shake the device as a method to limit unintended file transfers. According to the report, the option will be end-to-end encrypted to promote the security of files. This can be a helpful feature addition to allow users to transfer files in a swift manner without the need to send them as chats.
To improve the experience, WhatsApp recently announced new features for WhatsApp channels. (Image:Unsplash)
The number will remain hidden from people outside of your phonebook. This will help protect the privacy of the sender from unknown contacts. People nearby can offer a practical option to users in limited scenarios. However, only time will tell if the feature will be an easier option for file sharing compared to normal texting to a contact.
The use cases may be limited if it turns out to be a tedious process. It will likely be released for testers in the coming weeks and roll out later. Meanwhile, Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg recently shared four features that will debut on the platform for channel users. You can read more on this update here.
