WhatsApp, a popular instant messaging application, is in the news for testing new features. In the latest move to upgrade the experience, the company is working on the option to verify an account using passkeys, according to WABetaInfo. The option was spotted under development in the 'iOS 24.2.10.73' update on iOS. Discovered in the TestFlight build, it will roll out for beta users soon, the report noted.
It will offer an enhanced experience for users to access their accounts. In the screengrab shared in the report, the option will be available within the 'Passkey' section. "Your passkey gives you a secure and easy way to log back into your account," the description read. According to the report, users will be able to "Create Passkey" in this section in the upcoming build.
It can ease the login experience to some extent and eliminate the need for a six-digit code to log in to WhatsApp. This feature could allow people to log in to the app via the device's authentication apparatus, such as the passcode, Face ID or Touch ID. This will act as an alternative to other authentication methods to gain access to accounts.

Given the trend of passkeys, the change will also bring modern WhatsApp authentication methods to make the login process more intuitive. Do note that the news outlet said the feature could be optional depending on your convenience. Plus, depending on their needs, a user may also be allowed to disable the feature via the app settings.
As for devices that do not have passkeys configured, users can still log in to their accounts via the traditional methods. It can help ease the transition and value a user's security preferences. It will likely arrive for users on WhatsApp after the beta trials are over and no significant issues with the implementation pop-up.
