WhatsApp, a Meta-owned messaging application, tests new features for users at regular intervals. In a recent move, the company is working to bring a "file sharing feature" to let users share large files with nearby people without relying on the internet. According to WABetaInfo, the feature is undergoing development in the "24.15.10.70" version via the TestFlight program for iPhone users.

According to the report, the under-development "People nearby" feature may be available in a future version of the app on iOS. Earlier, the company was spotted working on the feature on Android in April 2024. With the feature, nearby users will be able to send and receive files, which may include photos, videos, documents and more easily to devices without an internet connection.

As per the screengrab of the feature, the iOS mechanism may mandate scanning a QR code to share files. This can help improve file sharing across contacts and WhatsApp accounts in close proximity where sharing files over the internet is not an option. Plus, it can ease the sharing of large files in areas where internet connectivity is unstable and save daily data limits for prepaid users in India.

People nearby may be supported across platforms ranging from Android to iOS and will likely offer end-to-end encryption so that only the receiver of the information can gain access to the information. However, readers should note the feature is in its early stages and the mechanism to share files may be altered to some extent. Elements such as permissions, privacy measures and UI may be tweaked in upcoming builds.

WABetaInfo noted the release of the People nearby is "uncertain" due to several unspecified factors. Meanwhile, on Android, the company was spotted developing People nearby within the settings page to list permissions to use the feature. A recipient may also have to open the same screen to connect with the host. Phone numbers may remain hidden during the process. The feature may require storage, location and nearby device detection permissions.
