Microsoft has announced that the iconic word processor application -Wordpad is all set to exit from future Windows-powered machines. The Redmond-headquartered giant said that it will no longer offer updates to the application and soon remove it from the "future release of Windows."
Announcing the change in a recent article, the company recommends using its paid alternative - Microsoft Word for .doc and .rtf files. The word processor is more feature-rich than the deprecated one. Secondly, Notepad can be used to deal with .txt files.
"WordPad is no longer being updated and will be removed in a future release of Windows. We recommend Microsoft Word for rich text documents like .doc and .rtf and Windows Notepad for plain text documents like .txt," the company said in an article that deals with 'deprecated features'.
According to The Verge, the application has shipped on the software since Windows 95. The update comes soon after the firm announced upgrades for Notepad. In a Windows Insiders blog post, Microsoft added that Notepad will start saving sessions automatically to eliminate the dialog box that appears before closing the app. It will also restore previous tabs to start from where the user left. A user can disable this feature from settings if they wish.
On a related note, the company deprecated Cortana's standalone app in June. "This change only impacts Cortana in Windows, and your productivity assistant, Cortana, will continue to be available in Outlook mobile, Teams mobile, Microsoft Teams display, and Microsoft Teams rooms," the tech giant added.
Speaking of other updates, the company is pressing hard to integrate artificial intelligence into its offerings and Microsoft Office apps are no exception. This could be an attempt to divert the audience to these apps from free alternatives. The business is also betting big on AI-powered Bing to challenge Google's search monopoly.
