JE Technology Desk: Microsoft Office, the tech giant's workspace program, is used across the globe for business and education purposes. And after over a decade-old reign (15 years, to be precise), Calibri is set to give the crown of default font to Aptos in these apps. The change aims to serve users with the perfect font on higher-resolution screens for sharpness and uniformity.

Microsoft experimented with five new fonts to choose one as the default pick for its Microsoft 365 apps. One of the fonts in testing was Bierstadt, which was later renamed Aptos and awarded (after user feedback) the crown of Calibri. This font will start appearing in Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook for millions of users and become the default pick in a few months.

Who created Aptos?

The font was created by Steve Matteson, a type designer and typographer. His other works include TrueType fonts in Windows and Segoe font. According to the Microsoft blog post, Matteson added a "slight humanist touch" while designing the font. He aimed for a universal look than a "mechanical or institutional" appeal.

The sans serif font has simple letterforms, and uniform strokes and is easy to read. It is made up of geometric shapes and supports several languages.

Other fonts in testing, "Grandview, Seaford, Skeena, and Tenorite", will also be available in the apps. Calibri will stay pinned just like the classic Times New Roman and Arial are at the top of the font menu in web view. Apart from new fonts, the Redmond-headquartered tech giant added a redesigned font picker, new themes, backgrounds and colours.
