WWDC 2023: Apple, at this year's developers' conference, revealed plans to chop the wake phrase 'Hey Siri' to trigger the voice assistant to just 'Siri.' The command will help users quickly ask questions and follow up on queries from Apple's Siri. The update comes on the expected lines, as Mark Gurman from Bloomberg hinted about the upcoming change recently.

This change will materialise in iOS 17 and iPadOS 17. As for Mac machines, the company said the feature will be limited to computers powered by Apple's in-house chips, reports Macrumors. Among hearables, the second-gen AirPods Pro will make it to the new functionality.

In the future, the assistant will get triggered by just saying 'Siri' rather than the original two-word phrase and will not require subsequent triggers during follow-ups. "Once activated, users can issue multiple commands in succession without needing to reactivate the assistant," Apple said in a press release.

With the move, the Cupertino-based tech giant will join Amazon, which allows the activation of voice assistant 'Alexa' through a single word. Moreover, Microsoft also did the same with Cortana in 2021. On the other hand, Google continues to have the trigger phrase 'Ok Google' and 'Hey Google' instead of a single word for Google Assistant.

Meanwhile, speaking of WWDC 2023, the feature is among the significant upgrades announced at the mega event today. Other striking software announcements include iOS 17, iPadOS 17, watchOS 10 and macOS Sonoma. These OSs will be released for beta testers starting today and will move towards stability and public release later this year. The wake word enhancement will likely release for the general public in September this year.
