YouTube Update: If you're still clinging to your older iPhone or iPad to stream YouTube, it might be time to rethink your setup. YouTube has officially rolled out version 20.22.1 of its app, and with it comes a new requirement: iOS 16 or later. That means older devices like the iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, iPhone 7, the first-gen iPhone SE, and even the iPod touch (7th gen) can no longer run the latest version of the app.
iPads aren’t spared either. If your device isn’t running iPadOS 16 or higher—models like the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 4, for example—you’re out of luck when it comes to installing the newest YouTube update.

According to a report by MacRumors, this shift is part of a wider trend among major tech companies to phase out support for outdated software. The goal? Focus on devices that are secure, compatible with new features, and capable of receiving regular updates.
Still want to use YouTube on those older gadgets? You can head over to m.youtube.com via your browser. But don’t expect the full experience—features like downloads, smooth UI, and performance enhancements will likely be missing.
Interestingly, YouTube’s move comes just days after WhatsApp made a similar call, dropping support for iPhones below iOS 15.1 and Android phones running versions older than 5.0. Meta explained that these older systems simply don’t meet today’s security and performance standards.
So, if your phone or tablet is showing its age, now might be the right moment to consider an upgrade. Not just for YouTube—but to stay compatible with the broader digital ecosystem.
