YouTube, a popular video streaming giant, announced in its latest blog that it is developing an AI framework to enhance music expression on the app and protect creators and their work. The company highlighted it is working with Universal Music Group to devise an AI framework. The pool of selected artists will help the company collect insights about generative AI experiments and research undergoing on the platform.
As per the blog by CEO Neal Mohan, in 2023, content that relates to generative AI tools garnered over 1.7 billion views. Hence to empower creativity using AI, the company introduced YouTube's Music AI Incubator, which will help "inform YouTube's approach" as it works with "innovative artists, songwriters, and producers".

Content ID, YouTube's rights managing technology to ensure the monetary sums for content use will evolve. This would further balance the interests of "copyright holders" and the community on the platform. While the company has not given granular details, it says in the "new era of generated content", it aims to help "artists and creators make money". This may imply revenue streams for creators from AI-based content.
Further, Mohan added that YouTube will extend its policy safeguards to AI-generated content to protect the YouTube community. For instance, the policy on manipulated content that restricts users from uploading content with false claims that may "mislead viewers about an atrocity" will continue to evolve to meet emerging challenges.
The blog admitted that while the use of AI can complicate the challenges of "trademark and copyright abuse, misinformation, spam, and more," it can also help identify such content. It promised more details about these technologies in the months to come. "These three principles are a critical part of our overall approach to AI at YouTube. In the months ahead, we'll share more about specific technologies, monetization opportunities, and policies we're developing," Mohan added.
