YouTube Update: YouTube is making some changes to how mid-roll ads work, and it’s set to kick in on May 12. The big change? Ads won’t pop up in the middle of a sentence or during an intense action scene. Instead, YouTube will place them during natural breaks in the video, like pauses or transitions. The goal is to keep the experience smooth for viewers while still making sure ads help creators earn money.

For older videos that were uploaded before February 24, YouTube will automatically update the mid-roll ads to follow the new rules. If you’re a creator and prefer to manage your ads yourself, you can opt-out of these changes through YouTube Studio. However, videos that have disruptive ad placements could see lower revenue after May 12.

YouTube is also rolling out a new tool to help creators place ads better. It’ll suggest if a mid-roll ad you manually placed might work better at a natural pause in the video. This feature should help balance both user experience and revenue.

And if you’re someone who manually places mid-roll ads, YouTube is encouraging you to give the automatic system a try. According to their research, creators who use a mix of automatic and manual ads see, on average, a 5% increase in revenue. But don’t worry – “You still control whether to show mid-roll ads in your videos and where you would like those ads to be shown.”
