Hyderabad Rain: Heavy rainfall over the weekend left several areas of Hyderabad waterlogged, sparking a fresh wave of online comparisons between India’s two leading tech cities, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Videos of flooded roads and even waterlogged flyovers went viral, reigniting the long-running debate on urban infrastructure between residents of the two cities.

Social media platform X was flooded with reactions, particularly from Bengaluru users who questioned why their city is often criticised for similar problems while others like Hyderabad escape such attention. One Bengaluru-based doctor shared footage of a flooded Hyderabad flyover, writing sarcastically, “Bengaluru is terrible, let’s go to Hyderabad.”

Another user pointed out that if such flooding had occurred in Bengaluru, it would have grabbed global headlines. “Hyderabad got the floods but not the fame,” the post read. Some even mocked earlier comparisons that favoured Hyderabad, joking that those users were “washed away in the drains.”

Meanwhile, some users raised serious concerns about failing civic infrastructure in Indian metros. A widely shared post said the problem wasn’t about one city being better than the other, but about a general neglect of urban planning across Tier-1 cities. Cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Pune, and Gurgaon all face similar issues after heavy rainfall, it added.

Hyderabad Weather

Hyderabad experienced its heaviest monsoon rain of the season on Friday evening, July 18, causing severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions across the city. Several areas recorded rainfall above 100 mm, leaving roads flooded and commuters stranded. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rain over the next two to three days across Telangana, including Hyderabad.

IMD Hyderabad head Nagaratna stated that yellow alerts have been issued, with chances of heavy rainfall in some parts of the state. Though Saturday saw clearer skies, waterlogging from the previous day still affected traffic flow. According to the Telangana Development Planning Society, the highest rainfall was 129.5 mm in Pulkal (Sangareddy), followed by 123.5 mm in Chevella (Rangareddy).

The IMD has warned of light to moderate showers, with occasional intense spells and gusty winds (30–40 kmph), likely in Hyderabad during evening and night hours.
