Hyderabad News: Telangana Police apprehended an ambulance thief after a thrilling chase on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway on Saturday. The suspect had hijacked a 108 ambulance in Hayatnagar, located on the outskirts of Hyderabad and attempted to use it as a getaway vehicle.

The chase began after the ambulance driver reported the theft to the police. Officers quickly mobilised and pursued the suspect, who drove the siren-blaring ambulance at high speeds towards Vijayawada. The pursuit turned chaotic as the thief wove through traffic, at times outpacing the police vehicles.

In a concerning incident, the ambulance struck an Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police, Jana Reddy, as he tried to halt the vehicle in Chityala. Reddy sustained serious injuries and was immediately taken to a private hospital in Hyderabad for treatment.

Despite the collision, the thief continued his reckless driving, crashing into a gate at the Korlapahad toll plaza in Kethepalli Mandal. Meanwhile, police in Suryapet Mandal received updates about the chase and set up a blockade using lorries. When the thief spotted the blockade, he attempted to swerve but lost control, causing the ambulance to veer off the road and crash into nearby bushes.

Police immediately apprehended the suspect at the scene. Initial investigations revealed that the thief has a criminal background, with prior involvement in multiple theft cases across various police jurisdictions.

Authorities are now questioning the thief to understand his motives and have launched an investigation into his previous criminal activities. While there have been reports of thefts involving buses from the Road Transport Corporation, this incident marks a rare occurrence of an ambulance being hijacked.
