The schools and colleges of Hyderabad are on high alert after several cases of substance abuse were uncovered among the students in educational institutions. The colleges have released an advisory for students, warning them of strict action if they are found involved in any such activities.
The vigilance from educational institutions comes after the Anti-Narcotics Bureau discovered that several of the youths are consuming drugs. The Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB) conducted surprise checks at many prestigious schools and colleges. During the checks, the Anti-Narcotics Bureau found suspicious substances on several of the campuses.

The raids are part of the broader strategy of the Telangana government to combat the issue of drug consumption among youths. TGANB stated that the most basic and effective way of countering the issue was to eradicate it from the educational institutes. The anti-narcotics bureau found cocaine in one of the most reputed colleges in one of its searches, reported News Meter. Apart from this, several cases of consumption of dangerous substances, such as marijuana, were revealed in raids in the institutions, raising concern about the growing influence of these substances on students.
In an attempt to tackle the issue, Prahari Clubs have been established in 20,989 high schools in Telangana, while 4,729 colleges and universities of the state formed Anti-Drug Committees (ADCs). More institutions are forming these bodies to combat the issue. Prahari Clubs have an organisational structure that includes school authorities, parents, and students at the same time.
The school principals are appointed as presidents, senior teachers as vice presidents, and members such as students, parents, and local police representatives. The aim of these clubs is to create drug-free zones around educational institutes. “The formation of these clubs is a proactive step to ensure educational institutions are safe from the influence of drug abuse,” a TGANB official was quoted as saying by News Meter.
