The Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) announced some changes to the previous route map for the second phase of the Hyderabad Metro, which was proposed by the previous BRS-led government. The HMRL on Monday stated that a new Hyderabad Metro route plan has been finalised on a total stretch of 70 kilometres under the second phase.

The changes in the previous route map were announced after Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy ordered that the routes proposed by the previous government be dropped as they are not useful for the majority of sections. HMRL is preparing new Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the new metro corridors and it will be ready in about three months, reported news agency IANS.

HMRL Managing Director NVS Reddy said that the new route will connect the airport from the four corners of Hyderabad to ensure the metro rail services are available to the majority of the city’s commuters. HMRL stated that the objective behind the changes is to provide metro services to more people, which gives the public an alternative transportation system.

The alternate routes will ensure airport connectivity, giving much-needed relief from traffic woes and meeting the demand for comfortable public transport options. At present, the Hyderabad Metro Rail operates on three routes covering 69 km between Miyapur and LB Nagar, JBS station to MGBS and Nagole to Rayadurg.

The second phase will expand the metro rail network from Secunderabad JBS to MGBS till Chandrayangutta Cross Road. In Route 2, the Metro will go from MGBS Metro Station to Falaknuma (5.5 km) and then to Chandrayangutta Cross Road (1.5 km).
