Telangana News: A 26-year-old man was arrested in Telangana for allegedly entering a temple unlawfully and committing what police described as an “indecent” act in front of an idol, officials said on Sunday. The incident took place late Saturday night at the Katta Maisamma temple in Safilguda.

Police identified the accused as Altaf, a resident of Bidar district in Karnataka. A case was registered at the Neredmet police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for trespassing into a place of worship and insulting religious beliefs. He was produced before a city court and sent to judicial remand, according to a release issued by the Malkajgiri police commissionerate.

Following the incident, protests were held by leaders and supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party, along with pro-Hindu groups and local devotees. Protesters alleged that the accused had urinated within the temple premises. A video circulated on social media showed a group of people assaulting a man outside the temple after questioning him over the alleged act. Police said they are verifying the background and past record of the accused and are examining the video footage.

Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao visited the temple and termed the incident “blasphemous”. In a post on X, he criticised the ruling Indian National Congress in Telangana and accused it of remaining silent on the issue. Rao also said the BJP would protest to protect Hindu temples and faith. His post included strong remarks, which have drawn attention online.

Meanwhile, police appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid spreading rumours or unverified information on social media. Officials said misinformation could disturb public peace and communal harmony. Citizens were urged to rely only on official police updates and cooperate with the investigation.

Police said further action will be taken strictly as per law after completion of the inquiry.
