Two students were killed and nine others injured in a shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday, authorities confirmed. Some of the injured remain in critical condition at local hospitals, and Providence Mayor Brett Smiley warned that the number of casualties could rise as investigations continue.

The suspect, described by police as a male dressed entirely in black, remains at large. Law enforcement officials believe he fled the campus on foot following the attack. Video footage from the university library quickly went viral, showing terrified students crouched behind bookshelves as loud bangs echoed through the room. At least seven distinct sounds were heard, coinciding with moments of panic as students attempted to hide from the gunman.

In the footage, over a dozen students can be seen pressed against library shelves, some with tears streaming down their faces. The intensity of the situation left students visibly shaken, highlighting the chaos and fear during the unfolding attack.

SWAT Officers Sweep Library

Moments after the initial sounds, SWAT officers in full tactical gear entered the library, ordering students to raise their hands. “Obviously there’s something going on, we’re here to help you… just listen to our commands and we’ll get you out of here now,” one officer is heard saying. Students were instructed to quickly retrieve their belongings before being escorted out in a controlled but tense manner.

Talia Levine, a Brown student and former NewsCenter 5 intern, described sheltering in place on the 11th floor for about four hours. “We were hiding in groups and in the bathroom until the police broke down the door, and we were cleared to go down to the basement for another two hours,” she said.

Survivors Relive Past Trauma

Among those affected was 20-year-old sophomore Zoe Weissman, a survivor of the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, where 17 people were killed. “I think mentally I feel like I’m 12 again. These feels exactly how I felt in 2018,” Weissman said. She highlighted the recurring trauma faced by students who have survived multiple school shootings, pointing to other incidents at institutions such as Oxford, Michigan, and Michigan State.

Levine added that two of her friends had been in the classroom of the engineering building where the shooting occurred but left before the gunman opened fire. The footage and eyewitness accounts have underscored the terror and urgency of law enforcement’s response.

Authorities are continuing to search for the suspect and urge anyone with information to come forward. The university has placed the campus on lockdown and continues to provide support to students and staff affected by the tragedy.
