Selena Gomez has always been open about her fluctuating weight, which is a result of her battle with lupus. She has never shied away from responding to trolls who comment on her body and hasn’t been shy about clapping back at haters. Being aware that she is in the public eye at events and on social media, she’s subject to scrutiny but recently revealed how online criticism sometimes takes an emotional toll on her, even though she tries to tune it out.

Selena Gomez graced Jay Shetty's podcast with her fiancé Benny Blanco, where she talked about how sometimes online criticism affects her. She said, “I fall victim to looking at things. It doesn’t add anything to your life. It’s just so difficult from the choices, the people you date. It’s like nobody cares about that stuff with men."
Revealing how constant scrutiny makes her sad and has made her a tad bitter, the singer stated, “I think we just carry a lot. My weight’s a big one too. Everybody just has something to say, and it’s really making me sad. Not even sad—no, I’m not a victim—but I think it’s made me a tad bitter. And I feel really guilty for saying that. But it’s true."

The Only Murders in the Building actor also discussed how women are often judged for their appearance, stating, “This isn’t news to anybody that women have a lot more intense feelings about their appearance, what they are wearing, to everything."

Gomez shared how she prepares herself before attending an event: “When I get prepared for an event, 90 percent of the time I’m saying, ‘I just hope I can take the picture and sit down.’"

When asked how she deals with negativity on social media, she responded, “I do most of the time ignore everything. I don’t have anything on my phone at that moment. So, there are ways to combat it."

Back in 2015, Gomez revealed that she'd been diagnosed with lupus two years prior in an interview with Billboard. This public announcement came after she abruptly ended her 2013 tour to check herself into a rehab center to undergo treatment. “I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke," she shared.

After facing body-shaming comments in 2024, Gomez also shared that she has been battling Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), a condition that affects her weight.
