The Batman 2 Update: Director Matt Reeves is set to bring the highly anticpated sequel to The Batman, alongside co-writer Mattson Tomlin. Reeves, who was present on the red carpet for the 2025 Emmy Awards as an executive producer for The Penguin, shared major updates about The Batman 2. He announced that he had finished the script for his long-awaited sequel and that the cast is currently reading it. He also dropped a bombshell on fans by confirming that actress Cristin Milioti, who won her first Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, for her role as Sofia Gigante in HBO's The Penguin, is not part of the cast of the upcoming The Batman 2 movie.

The Penguin Star Cristin Milioti Not Part Of The Batman 2

On the red carpet at the Emmys 2025, Reeves shared casting details about The Batman 2. He told MTV, "Cristin's not in this one. But that's because we were so deep into the script by the time we were in the show, so. But we'll see. I mean, I think she's incredible. What she did in the show is just astonishing. And what Lauren [LeFranc, showrunner] did in creating that character – I mean, creating this version of the character – is so special."

He further added, "So, it'd be really exciting to do something with her. But, she's not in this one, in full disclosure, just because we were so far along in the story that it was like, 'Oh gee, we could,' it might upset the applecart, let's say, given where the story goes, and what we were exploring. There are some things where it's like, 'Oh, we'd love to do this,' but actually, that doesn't fit within where the story goes."

The Batman became a blockbuster in 2022, and since then, the sequel has been generating significant buzz. In the latest updates, the script for Part II is finally done, and shooting is set to begin early next year. Reeves was quoted by Variety, he said, “We start shooting [the film] in spring, probably around the end of April or beginning of May. It’s been a long journey, but I am so incredibly excited. I’m really proud of the script me and Mattson [Tomlin] did, and we’ve started to share it with Robert [Pattinson].”

Reeves also revealed his excitement about returning to the gritty world of Gotham and how they are keeping the script tight with codes. He stated, “The Batman” team had to go to keep the script under wraps. “We put [the script] into a secret pouch that literally has a lock on it with a code. [Pattinson] was in New York at the time, and everything is high security.”

Besides The Batman 2, Reeves, who serve as an executive producer and a writing supervisor on HBO’s The Penguin, shared that the team is thinking of a potential second season.

Robert Pattinson is set to reprise his role as the Dark Knight, with Colin Farrell also returning as The Penguin, as confirmed by Reeves earlier, giving continuity to the HBO series. The film is slated to release on October 1, 2027.
