Super Scoopers, officially known as the Bombardier CL-415, are state-of-the-art amphibious aircraft designed specifically for aerial firefighting. These versatile planes are considered more effective than helicopters equipped with water buckets and traditional air tankers, thanks to their impressive water capacity and rapid replenishment capabilities.
Super Scoopers have proven to be a crucial asset in the United States' battle against California wildfire. Often loaned from Canada during peak wildfire seasons, these aircraft bolster local firefighting capabilities by covering large areas quickly and effectively. Their ability to operate near water sources and provide consistent fire suppression makes them particularly useful in regions with challenging terrain.
Super Scoopers can collect up to 1,600 gallons of water in a single pass. Unlike helicopters, which must return to a water source or base to refill, Super Scoopers can skim over the surface of any nearby water body—such as lakes, rivers, or oceans—at speeds of approximately 160 kilometres per hour. This unique feature allows them to rapidly replenish their water reserves and return to the firefight with minimal downtime.
Once airborne, the aircraft releases the water in a targeted area, dousing wildfires with high precision. The efficiency of Super Scoopers makes them invaluable during intense wildfire seasons, especially in regions like California, where fires are frequent and often devastating.
Challenges And Costs
Despite their effectiveness, deploying Super Scoopers is not without challenges. The aircraft typically costs around USD 30 million (250 crore), making it one of the most expensive firefighting tools. Maintenance, pilot training, and operational expenses further add to the costs.
Additionally, safety concerns can hinder their operation. For instance, in Los Angeles, one of two Canadian-loaned Super Scoopers had to be grounded after a civilian drone collided with its wing during firefighting efforts in Pacific Palisades. Unauthorised drone activity has become a growing issue, prompting the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to impose Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) in affected areas to ensure the safety of aerial operations.
While their high cost and operational challenges remain a hurdle, the unparalleled efficiency of these aircraft in mitigating wildfires underscores their critical role in modern firefighting efforts.
