Donald Trump, the former United States President and a Republican candidate for the 2024 US presidential elections, dodged an attempt on his life made by a 20-year-old shooter at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Saturday's attack shooter was promptly eliminated by the Secret Service. Later, he was identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a registered Republican from a nearby town Bethel Park.

The attack sent shockwaves across the globe as world leaders denounced the assassination attempt, decrying 'political violence'. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack on his 'friend', saying violence has no place in politics and democracies. He also wished Trump, whose upper right ear was injured in the attack, a speedy recovery.

Donald Trump Attack: Here are the top developments on the assassination attempt

1. The motive behind the Trump attack remained unclear as of now, said the FBI in a statement. However, the federal agency identified the attacker as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

2. A semi-automatic rifle was recovered from the spot, lying aside Crooks's body, NBC News reported citing official police sources. Notably, the attacker was promptly neutralised by the counter-sniper team.

3. The shooter used the rooftop of a nearby factory to target the Trump rally in Butler. According to US federal agencies, a distance of the rooftop is around 130 yards from where Trump was delivering his poll campaign address.

4. Citing the failure of the US Secret Service in failed Trump assassination, the United States Congress on Sunday said: “Congress will do a full investigation of the tragedy yesterday to determine where there were lapses in security and anything else that the American people need to know and deserve to know,” House Speaker Mike Johnson said. “But in the meantime, we’ve got to turn the rhetoric down. We’ve got to turn the temperature down in this country.”

5. Donald Trump attributed his close save to "divine intervention" during the poll rally in Pennsylvania. “It was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening,” Trump said.

“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, and shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening,” he said.

6. He further asked the Americans to stay united and not allow evil to win.

“In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win,” he said.

7. Meanwhile, Al Jazeera reported that authorities discovered bomb-making material from inside Crooks car. His gun was also identified as a semi automatic AR-15.
