Tropical storm Hilary reached the US state of California and unleashed flash floods in the east and west of Los Angeles after making landfall along Mexico’s Baja California coast on Sunday. Hilary is the first tropical storm to hit Southern California in 84 years, bringing high tornadoes, flash floods, high winds, and power outages. 

Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday declared a state of emergency for much of Southern California, with flash floods warning in areas accustomed to drought.

Here Are Top Updates On Tropical Storm Hilary:

- The US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) stated that Hilary made landfall on the northwestern coast of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula with a maximum sustained wind speed of 100 kilometres per hour.

- The tropical storm reached California after causing heavy rains in the Baja California peninsula. 

- The forecasters said that the mountain and desert areas in California could receive 5 to 10 inches of rain, as much as deserts receive in a year, as reported by Reuters.

- Hilary, the first tropical storm to hit Los Angeles County since 1939 caused severe flooding in the San Gabriel Mountains east of the city and coastal areas in Ventura County to the northwest.

- After days of preparation, US President Joe Biden instructed the officials to move personnel and supplies to the affected regions.

- Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also expressed concerns over the tropical storm and said the situation could get much worse. "My concern is that people will be a little dismissive and go out when we need people to stay at home, to stay safe,” Bass told a news briefing on Sunday.

- California’s two largest school districts, Los Angeles and San Diego also canceled schools on Monday as a precaution. The tropical storm also surprised residents in Rancho Mirage, as water and debris flowed over closed roads, stranding at least one pickup truck in water nearly to the top of its bed.

- One person died in Mexico amid reports of flash floods on the peninsula where some roads were swept away.
