Jaahnavi Kandula Death: Indian American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi on Thursday urged the Seattle Police to pursue its investigation into the tragic death of an Indian-origin student who was hit and killed by a police vehicle in Seattle, United States in January this year, with the seriousness it demands. "Jaahnavi Kandula's death was a horrible tragedy, and the scale of her loss should not be diminished or mocked by anyone," Krishnamoorthi said, as quoted by news agency PTI.

After a video of a Seattle police officer laughing about the death of a 23-year-old Indian graduate student Jaahnavi Kandula who was killed by a police car, surfaced on social media, it sparked a huge outrage as India condemned the act done by police officer and demanded a quick probe.

In the video, Daniel Auderer, who is captured on body camera while discussing the fatal collision, can be heard saying, "Yeah, just write a check. USD 11,000. She was 26 anyway, she had limited value."

"The recording of a Seattle Police officer making light of her death and questioning the value of her life is disgusting and unacceptable. I urge the Seattle Police Department to pursue its investigation into this matter with the seriousness it demands," Krishnamoorthi said.

Who Was Jaahnavi Kandula

The 23-year-old hailing from Andhra Pradesh was pursuing a master's degree at Northeastern University campus in South Lake Union. In 2021, she went to the US from Bengaluru on a student exchange programme and was due to graduate this year in December.

After India's ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu vehemently brought up the matter in Washington and demanded immediate action about the killing of Kandula and the highly insensitive actions of the police officer in Seattle, Washington state, the US government sprang into action. India received assurances from the US President Joe Biden administration that a prompt investigation will be conducted into the horrible death of Indian student Jaahnavi Kandula in Seattle.
